Solanum nigrum, the European black nightshade or simply black nightshade or blackberry nightshade, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Solanum. Black Nightshade may grow as a summer annual or short-lived perennial broadleaf plant that dies away after a few seasons. Black Nightshade berries are available in the late summer and fall. Black Nightshade is entirely edible, nutritious and delicious and with proper identification, a foragers goldmine, providing both edible berries and greens. Black Nightshade berries contain calcium, phosphorus and vitamin A. Despite serious safety concerns, black nightshade has been used for stomach irritation, cramps, spasms, pain, and nervousness. Some people apply black nightshade directly to the skin for a skin condition called psoriasis, hemorrhoids, and deep skin infections.
