Pterocarpus santalinus, with the common names red sanders, red saunders, red sandalwood, Rakt Chandan, and saunders wood, is a species of Pterocarpus endemic. It is a light-demanding small tree, growing to 26 ft tall with a trunk 50–150 cm diameter. It is fast-growing when young. It is used in traditional herbal medicine as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, tonic, hemorrhage, dysentery, aphrodisiac, anti-hyperglycaemic, and diaphoretic. Red sandalwood is used for treating digestive tract problems, fluid retention coughs, and for blood purification. Medicines are given from red sandalwood for skin ailments, constipation, diabetes, swelling of limbs, poisonous bites, bacteria, and cancer. It grows mostly in hilly areas. Even for 2,200 years, the red sandalwood tree will grow indestructible.
