Gongura is a plant, Roselle, grown for its edible leaves in Fiji and other countries like India. These leaves are used in south-central Indian cuisine to impart a tart flavor. Gongura comes in two varieties, green stemmed leaf and red-stemmed. The red-stemmed variety is sourer than the green stemmed variety. Its leaves, flowers, and seeds are medicinal in nature. Gongura leaves and flowers help cool the body and reduce inflammation. The leaves are purgative. An infusion of the leaves is used in the treatment of coughs. The leaves are used in the treatment of dysentery and bilious, blood and throat disorders. The peelings from the stems can use in the treatment of anemia. Gongura plays an important role in reducing and balancing body heat. It contains iron, vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin B6, C, and anti-oxidants.
