Amaranthus dubious is an annual herb. It belongs to the economically important family Amaranthaceae. This plant is native to South America, Mexico, and the West Indies, however; it is widely introduced throughout the world. Usually, it grows to a size of 80–120 cm. It has both green and red varieties, as well as some with mixed colors. This species is valued as a leafy vegetable throughout South and Southeast Asia. The seed, oil, and leaf are used as food. The entire plant is used to make medicine. Amaranth is used for ulcers, diarrhea, swelling of the mouth or throat, and high cholesterol. Amaranth leaves, in general, are recommended as good food with medicinal properties for young children, lactating mothers, and for patients with fever, hemorrhage, anemia, constipation, or kidney complaints. It is said to be a medicine for diseases like fever, cold sunny, phlegm, etc.
