Simarouba glauca is an obsolete name of Simarouba amara. Common names include paradise-tree, dysentery-bark, bitterwood, and Lakshmi Taru and it belongs to the Simaroubaceae family. Paradise-Tree grows in full sun or partial shade on almost any well-drained soil. People take its fruit for diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, water retention (edema), fever, and stomach upset. It enriches the soil and regulates the groundwater level. The wood is generally insect resistant and is used in the preparation of quality furniture, toys, matches, as pulp (in papermaking). It can be also used for industrial purposes in the manufacture of biofuel, soaps, detergents, lubricants, varnishes, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. It is useful for naturopathy. The leaves and stems of paradise trees are known for their properties to cure cancer and improve immunity in cancer patients.
